The Compass program supports undergraduate students with advising, tutoring and navigating issues of transition in academic, creative, social, cultural and personal areas. The program provides this support through academic advising, one on one tutoring, weekly workshops, retreats and field trips.
Compass Workshop programs consists of several components. Visiting faculty and students from major departments present work and expectations of their areas. These conversations enhance academic advising for freshmen as we explore the range of opportunities in varied areas of study. Other staff and administrators across the college visit the workshop to familiarize students with their specific offices. Study sessions are conducted for the freshmen class: Perspectives in Western Art History. Throughout the semester, tutors model and strategize best methods for study and retention of material. Students are also asked to create a time management calendar for keeping track of assignments and schedules. Students are placed in small groups during workshop sessions for informal critiques of work in progress. Faculty and Graduate mentors are also available to offer guidance and support.
