Canonicus Camp http://www.canonicus.org/
We were introduced to music and drumming as another mode of expression with visiting artist, Kera Washington. We also looked at some great work by students in Painting, Animation, Industrial Design, Photography, Graphic Design, Fashion, Illustration, Architecture and Studio Foundation.
This retreat invited students from Compass as well as members of BAU, the Black Artists Union which is one of the longest running student groups at MassArt. Keith Washington, Lelaina Romero and Lyssa Palu-ay were faculty/staff mentors present.

KERA WASHINGTON-VISITING ARTIST
Kera Washington of Zili Misik: http://www.zilimisik.com conducted an exciting drum/rhythm workshop. Zili Misik has been bridging cultures with captivating sounds that evoke the African continent. She talked about the history of the drum in African cultures as a mode of expression that was silenced during years of slavery.
Inspired by the drumming, Jake Giberson and Thonah Ep demonstrate Capoeira, a Brazilian art form that combines elements of martial arts, sports, and music. It was created in Brazil mainly by descendants of African slaves with Brazilian native influences.
