We'll get together to talk about how to get through reviews & final Projects and other end of semester stress! Experienced students and mentors will share wisdom and tips. Come have some food, prepare for reviews, and share some music with us.

Please send song ideas so that LeLaina can make a playlist to lromero@massart.edu...think of songs that represent PRESSURE to you, or that help you to get through stressful times.

Sweet Music Jam II: CREATING BALANCE

Jinel Brito-3D Ceramics, Keith Washington, Lelaina Romero, Pierre Victor-Painting

Let's get together for some pizza and sing/play/draw/paint etc. about how we take care of ourselves.

~What does balance mean to you?
~What throws you off balance?
~How do you create balance as students/artists?

We'll use music and visual art to explore how we take care of ourselves now, and what we need to take even better care of ourselves going forward. You do not need to be a "musician" to participate!

You bring:
~Songs that represent self-care and balance, either on a CD or mp3 player
~Any art supplies you want to use. We'll have some available.
~Musical instruments

Everyone will have an opportunity to share a song (either listening or playing), or you can participate by creating visual art and/or talking with the group. We grow and learn in connection with one another. Sharing experiences, struggles, and ideas about creating balance together will help us individually and as a community.

some old friends and welcome the new students.

NYCITY FIELD TRIP

Freshmen and upper class Compass students and faculty took a day trip to New York city. We visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Brooklyn Art Museum and had a rockin' lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe.

Doug and Mike Starns' work on that last day on the roof of the MET.

BROOKLYN ART MUSEUM

KARA WALKER

FRED TOMASELLI
This focused mid-career survey presents a selection of Fred Tomaselli’s unique hybrid paintings and collages from 1990 to the present. These layered paintings combine cutout images of plants, birds, smiling mouths, and hands (clipped from field guides and magazines) with passages of paint and actual prescription pills and hallucinogenic plants to create highly stylized, eye-popping compositions. Tomaselli’s artwork draws upon a wide range of sources from both popular culture and art history, and from his own hobbies of gardening, kayaking, and bird-watching.

CHAIRS OF MAJOR DEPARTMENTS VISIT

This is the second year that faculty chairs of major departments generously share their time, work, experiences and answered questions about their areas. Students responded strongly to this series of visits as one of the most helpful parts of the Compass workshop. Students made connections with faculty and were invited to final reviews or viewing work at the end of the semester.

Stephan Hamilton and Destiny Palmer, MassArt and Compass alums organized the exhibit, Traditions Remixed featuring their personal and collaborative work. Congrats and Kudos to a great show!

Traditions Remixed
"Traditions remixed is an artist collective founded by Massart alumni and Black artists union members Destiny Palmer and Stephen Hamilton. This collective comes out of the spirit of cooperation and community building among artists of color, which has grown out of their experiences in Massarts black artists union. Together they strive to create art exhibitions based on common interests while showing a body of work which speaks to there own personal styles. Both artists are deeply interested in tradition and are constantly reinvestigating, reinterpreting and expanding upon the aesthetics inherent in the the cultural and artistic traditions, which they are a part of . Their goal is to create a supportive community for young artists of color, encouraging collaboration and networking."

COMPASS WORKSHOPS 2010

The Compass program supports undergraduate students with advising, tutoring and navigating issues of transition in academic, creative, social, cultural and personal areas. The program provides this support through academic advising, one on one tutoring, weekly workshops, retreats and field trips.

Compass Workshop programs consists of several components. Visiting faculty and students from major departments present work and expectations of their areas. These conversations enhance academic advising for freshmen as we explore the range of opportunities in varied areas of study. Other staff and administrators across the college visit the workshop to familiarize students with their specific offices. Study sessions are conducted for the freshmen class: Perspectives in Western Art History. Throughout the semester, tutors model and strategize best methods for study and retention of material. Students are also asked to create a time management calendar for keeping track of assignments and schedules. Students are placed in small groups during workshop sessions for informal critiques of work in progress. Faculty and Graduate mentors are also available to offer guidance and support.

Aurelio Ramirez, Director of Financial Assistance speaking about resources in his office.

Compass upper class students meet with faculty and graduate mentors for informal critiques, advising and support throughout the semester. Tutors from the learning center visit to talk about services they offer and make connections with students.
